Motorcycle Accident Statistics for Virginia

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle keeps yearly statistics for motorcycle accidents. Statistics for the years 2008 to 2012 show the following:

Total Motorcycle crashes by Year in Virginia

  • 2008: 2,638
  • 2009: 2,115
  • 2010: 2,208
  • 2011: 2,288
  • 2012: 2,416

The jurisdictions with the six highest number of motorcycle crashes for 2008 were Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Prince William County, Hampton, Chesapeake, and Richmond. These high totals were similar for the other years (2009-2012).

The total motorcycle fatalities for 2008-2012 ranged from a low of 71 in 2009 to a high of 90 in 2011.

The total injuries for 2008-2012 range averaged around 2,100 per year.

The age groups where the most people were killed in motorcycle accidents were the 21-35 age group and the 36-50 age group. The 51-65 age group was the third highest fatal accident age range. The statistics were similar when motorcycle injuries by age group were analyzed.
